At this point I think I understood the central facet of Bertha’s personality: she was a genius when it came to seeming to be in control, but in reality she had no control – or much less than she made out. She was inscrutable, not because she was masking knowledge of what was really going on, but because she had no real conception of what was going on, and didn’t want to let on.
