Empty Nights (Answer 3/9)

Question: Which Swiss novel, published earlier this year, featured a chain-smoking walrus called Alfred the Great, a coleslaw-loving kangaroo called Denton Major, and a talking sandwich with no name?

Answer: It was, as Caspar suggests, Maria Vonberg, though the title of the book is Empty was the Night, not Empty as the Night. In either case, though, the night was somewhat empty – unlike the book, which was full of all sorts of crazy things (few of which conpensated for the overall lack of skilful writing).
