Chekhov on a Chimney

Active Readers arise! As this only mildly overblown news item proves, the police are finally clamping down on our freedom to let our children (should we have them) read in unusual places. Unofficial sources claim that police officers have long shown concern over the growth of Active Reading, voicing regret that the ‘days of curling up in an old armchair are over’. Ha! Try as you might, you shall not handcuff our reading habits! We will go on reading in unusual places until the end of time. We will read on the seas and oceans, we will read in the air, we will read in the fields, in the streets, on the beaches and on the hills. We will defend our rights to read on chimneys, whatever the proximity of telegraph wires and the possible lack of a flat-roofed extension. We will never surrender.
